Restaurant

For Din Tai Fung’s flagship New York City location, Rockwell Group reimagined the beloved global brand by developing a fresh and compelling design narrative to honor the restaurant's history, and match its East Coast debut.

Rooted in Din Tai Fung’s values of tradition, family, and authenticity, the redefined aesthetic embraces the artistry, theatricality and cultural significance inherent in the cuisine, while also drawing from the pulse of the Theater District outside its doors.

Inside, a two-story chandelier cascades down the center of a winding staircase that leads down to the subterranean restaurant. The interior is choreographed into a variety of spaces, evoking the symmetry and progression of the gardens and courtyards as a whole, while juxtaposing moments of grandeur with pockets of intimacy. Dramatic forms, vibrant colors, and moody pendant lighting distinguish each space, while the ceiling, designed to look like a tapestry, brings all of the elements together in unison.

At the heart of the restaurant is Din Tai Fung’s famed dumpling kitchen, where guests can observe 30 chefs at work—a signature highlight of the experience.

Two dining rooms mirror one another on either side of the central bar area, differentiated by their color palettes in green and red jade. For larger groups, dining pods along the perimeter of the main dining area feature rounded banquettes, floor-to-ceiling metal screens, and large custom pendants.
