In response to a growing public and civic demand, a temporary viewing platform was erected at Ground Zero soon after September 11, 2001. Designed in collaboration with Diller Scofidio + Renfro and Kevin Kennon Architects, the platform was installed for eight months at the World Trade Center site. Elevated 13-feet above ground and stretching more than 300 feet in length, the platform provided a full 180-degree view of the site. Made from humble materials—metal scaffolding, high-grade birch plywood and rough decking—the platform accommodated hundreds of people at a time and provided a dignified place for reflection without compromising critical onsite recovery work.
