Directed by Lear deBessonet in honor of the musical’s late legendary composer Stephen Sondheim, the Tony Award-winning Into the Woods opened on Broadway on July 10, 2022. One of our main tasks for the set design was to accommodate the orchestra’s footprint on stage—a central element that makes the live theatrical experience unique for a Broadway revival.

Three small-scale houses, belonging to Cinderella, the Baker a his Wife, and Jack, float against a black void.

The forest deepens as birch trees slowly descend onto the set. The performers come and go under the moonlight.

By placing the orchestra in full view of the audience, the musicians became part of the cast.
